Howdy Britannia Gardeners,
We're going to try out having work parties on weekday afternoons for a little while and see if we can drum up more enthusiasm and a critical mass of workers.
If you can make it, we'll have our first weekday work party on Monday, August 13th from 3-5.
Please write it in your calendar and come if you can make it! We can always switch back to Sundays if weekdays don't work out, but we've only had two or three people turning up at the past few Sundays, and we thought maybe a day change would help. People go away for weekends in the summer or they like to spend Sundays with their families... Quite a few of us are retired or work from home and have weekday flexibility...
Let me know if you would prefer a different weekday than Monday. Or if you have other ideas.
If lots of people show up, we can get SO much work done in an hour or two.

Here's our new sandwichboard sign! Thanks to Britannia staff for designing it and having it printed and laminated for us! (Hillary is going to design some tri-fold flyers for us, too. Unfortunately, the sandwichboard text says we try to meet every Sunday from 3:00-5:00, but the flyer can be less specific...)

Making our own compost in the Greenway...

Hi Brit Neighbours,
I phoned Sara Orchard (City's Green Streets Coordinator) to see if we could get regular Monday pick-ups of our Sunday work party garden debris, and she says there has been a budget cut in the City's refuse-collection department and she doesn't think we can rely on regular pick-ups. We could call and request pick-ups on the occasion of a big clean-up... but that won't help us with our one or two bags every Sunday.
I said we might be able to manage a City composting bin or two tucked away in a corner of the Greenway. She's sending us two coupons so we can get composting bins from the City works yard... I'll try to persuade Stef to go with me to get them in his station wagon.
We can experiment with the bins for a while and see if they work for us... If not, we'll call Sara back and see if we can figure something out for our Sunday garden waste. (One other possibility is the Drive Organics bin on their back porch, but let's try our own first and see if we can make it work. It'll need signage, I think, to make it work in such a public area. Something like: "Organic waste only; no meat or litter!")

An invitation to a Garden Workshop

Begin forwarded message:

From: "Ken Birrell" <birrellken@gmail.com>
Date: July 13, 2012 7:25:20 PM PDT
Subject: Garden Workshop

Hi Penny,
This is very last minute, but the time was changed and there was a mistake about the location.
Anyway, tomorrow at noon, Greenest City 2020 is coming over to my place to give a workshop on how to use water efficiently. If you are interested, or anyone in the Napier Greenway group, it would be nice if you could attend. As I say, despite what the flier (attached) says, it's at my place, 1738 Charles, at 12:00 noon tomorrow.
All the best,

Brit Neighbours Work Party this Sunday 3-5

I just talked to Pat and we're both available this Sunday for a work party, so let's do it. Come if you can, at 3:00, and stay as long as you're able.
Bring gloves, trowel, kneeling pad, etc. if you have them...
We'll do weeding, tidying up, and planting a few day lilies (extras from my garden).
