Hello Britannia Neighbours!
We had a brief meeting on Tuesday night (June 13th) -- attended by Eva, Jane, Helen, Pat, Penny, and Jill Smith.
We started with a list of news items, which I'll just rattle off here briefly: I wrote to Terry Dixon requesting ladybugs for the aphids in the oak trees and she forwarded my request to the appropriate department.
We have running water IN the greenway now! What a blessing!
We've been planting and beautifying the greenway in preparation for Super Saturday (June 17th) and the Commercial Drive Festival (June 18th). One last little tidy up will happen on Saturday morning (June 17th) at 10:30 ... for a quick weeding and to plant a few more plants.
Last Saturday afternoon our most enthusiastic planter was Claire, Helen's daughter. She planted impatiens and a pink silk rose, which is still doing fine!
One of our three new metal trash cans is missing. We are hoping that it wasn't stolen for the metal.
We need it! The amount of trash in the middle-most trash can is shocking now. It overflows! Terry Dixon is looking into this for us too.
We are in talks with Terry and Spring Gillard and metal artist Davide Pan about the possible construction of a sculpted bike rack (possibly including a clock tower) for the greenway.
Meanwhile we have gotten contracts signed by artist Victoria Oginski and Rajinder Bagga (of Sweet Cherubim) to get the panels done for the windows of Sweet Cherubim.
Jill Smith (Secretary of GWAC) was a guest at our meeting to tell us about her ideas having to do with the greening of Venables/Prior Street. Very inspiring! We may get involved by sponsoring a small project to "green" the north entryway to Britannia at Cotton and Venables, a rather grim area now. It could really do with some beautifying!
Cheers, Penny
